Please consider adding this spotting to the new North American Bat Tracker mission at http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/18306114
Thanks, Karen, for the mission suggestion! And thanks, J.T., for the ID! I've uploaded a few more pictures that show all that silver-frosted hair you suspected. You're exactly right--that's what he is, for sure! I saw him fly down onto our balcony and then wedge himself underneath the banister. He was a neat little guy!
Nice find, do you have any other notes on this guy? What type of structure was it found on? Although we can't see the trademark frosted tips of the back, the shape of the head, and the coloration on the front of the ears are decent identifiers. http://www.batcon.org/index.php/all-about-bats/species-profiles.html?task=detail&species=2160&country=43&state=all&family=all&limitstart=0 Given the time of year, this bat is going through migration. Along with Hoary bats, this species makes up the majority of specimens found during mortality surveys at wind farms across North America. http://www.batcon.org/index.php/what-we-do/bats-and-wind-energy.html Obligatory note: If you do not know what it is, or do not have the proper rabies vaccine, never handle a bat: http://www.batcon.org/index.php/bats-a-people/bats-and-rabies.html
You might like to add this to the Bat Monitoring mission http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/6543173
