Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Common or Brown frog. About 10 cm long, with short legs and robust body. Light green-brown, with darker brown stripes on legs. Tympan smaller than the eye.

Habitat:

Found on the edge of forest, in a drainage channel between the road and forest. Forest itself is a lowland oak amd beech forest, located in Geneva lake valley. This particular forest is protected as recognized and important habitat of Fire Salamanders, containing an important population.

Notes:

Seen (but not collected) during the protective action for fire salamanders - as mentioned above, the Maillet forest in Geneva lake valley is an protected Fire Salamander habitat, and during their mating season volunteers gather around these spots, capture adults and bring them back inside the forest. Beside salamanders, we often find frogs and newts as well, and if on the road, we collect them and free them again deep in the forest.
