Field Notes
Description:
Hornets Nest
Habitat:
Hornets nests are built by the queen hornet. The eggs are in the nests. The queen build the nest so they remain on the outside. Tiers are added to the nest by worker hornets thereafter. Nests frequently are found hanging in trees and on the sides of buildings within various environments including urban areas, farmlands, parklands, brownfield sites, woodlands and forests.
Notes:
This hornets nest is in a tree right outside of my house. We have decided to leave it there so as not to interfere with nature. Hornets fly in and out of the nest. They have been doing this all summer long. I looked it up and found out that since the nest is so high in the tree (about 10 feet up) it really is not dangerous. Even hurricane forces winds would not knock it out of the tree. So we will just wait for nature to run it's course and all the hornets will die off when it gets cold.
