Field Notes

Description:

A 15 mm long wasp with red head, black thorax and abdomen. It's flanks looked a pinkish white (the rest of the abdomen could not be studied). The ovipositor appeared to be the same length as the abdomen.

Habitat:

Found on a grey box gum tree ( Eucalyptus microcarpa)

Notes:

I could not study the wings to see any features that distinguished this from an Ichneumonid wasp. I understand that there are innumerable species of braconids.
If this is a braconid wasp , it is a parasitic wasp. I would appreciate any help with confirming the ID.
