Field Notes

Description:

Small aggressive colonial ants capable of inflicting quite painful bites (through delivery of formic acid). They appear to be omnivorous scavengers and hunters.

Habitat:

Found in multiple, shifting/ephemeral clusters of mounds over many parts of a large yard & garden next to a disturbed patch of remnant forest.

Notes:

I don't know if these ant are fire ants but it would be an appropriate name for them.
