The Downy Woodpecker is Sparrow-sized about 6 inches. Black and white, with a small red patch on the nape in males. Similar to the Hairy Woodpecker, but smaller and with a short, stubby bill. Picture three shows a Mourning Dove in the top of the same branch.
Habitat:
Wood lots, parks, and gardens; suet feeders in winter.
Notes:
The smallest, tamest, and most abundant of our eastern woodpeckers. It is a familiar bird in the assemblages of nuthatches, creepers, chickadees and Mourning Doves that gather in the woods during the fall migration (See picture three).
