Field Notes

Description:

This was a fairly large squirrel with a long bushy tail. The coat was gray with a silvery cast, especially around the neck. This one was checking the area for predators. They use their tail to signal others if they see a predator.

Habitat:

Spotted at a nest or den site which was looked like a pile of wood debris (seen in pic 3). Typically they live in burrows that they have dugout. I assume their burrow in under the wood debris. Along the Auduban Road in eastern Washington. Cascade foothills. Around 2000 ft. a.s.l.

Thanks, Tukup. They blend into tree bark and dead vegetation so well that they're easy to miss.
Great spotting Brian. Looks like it would have been hard to see them. Thanks for sharing.
