Field Notes

Description:

A beautifully complex patterned moth in green grey and brown. The front legs are extremely hairy, especially the femora (most easily seen in the last picture). Moths use these hairy legs to break up their moth-like pattern when at rest on tree bark to increase their invisibility from predators. The underwings are bright orange with dark bands (third picture). The 4th picture shows a close-up of the complex scale pattern on the thorax. About 1.5 cm long.

Habitat:

Came to the lights of a shopping center, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.
