Field Notes

Description:

Found severed in half (top & bottom) on rooftop of 20 story building in downtown Norfolk, VA, USA. Peregrines, vultures, osprey and other raptors are commonly seen feeding atop our high-rises. Time of death was likely weeks earlier, as any identifying color is completely gone from the feathers. Shape and length of bill and toes remind me of shorebird; but protrusion at back of head is a puzzle...

Notes:

Project Noah: I LOVE your site - and how helpful users are in IDing species. I have been trying - without success - to ID this dead bird. A friend suggested I post it here in case any one can help. While I understand death is taboo to some, death is truly is a part of life; and it is certainly part of scientists' body of knowledge - even citizen scientists. If you disagree, and want me to remove the two photos, please let me know. After all, it is your site. Thank you!

Species ID Suggestions

The bill and legs are very reminiscent of a marsh bird...the white streak above the eyes suggest it can be a clapper rail...
