Field Notes

Description:

red algae floating on top of water in rice terraces

Habitat:

water, subtropical rice terraces

Notes:

I spotted these red colored terraces at the village of Longshuba, near the town of Xinjie. The algae is not good for the terraces I was told and many villages remove it though Longshuba had yet to. It was actually known for its red terraces and people went there to see them, so I think they left some of the algae, even though it wasn't benficial.

It looks like our cranberry bogs, except ours are not quite so picturesque
