Field Notes

Description:

Capsicum is a genus of flowering plants in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. C. frutescens likely originated in South or Central America. It spread quickly throughout the tropical and subtropical regions in this area and still grows wild today. Capsicum frutescens is currently native to the majority of Central America as well as Northern and Western South America. It is believed that C. frutescens is the ancestor to the C. chinense species.

Habitat:

Planted (amidst other plants in the photos) in a large semi-urban yard & garden in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

The Indonesian fondness for hot and spicy food was enriched when the Spanish introduced chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens and C. annuum) from the New World to the region in 16th century. After that hot and spicy "sambals" have become an important part of Indonesian cuisine. Sambal -- a chili based sauce -- has evolved into many variants across Indonesia. (Wikipedia)
