Field Notes

Description:

Delicate long racemes with bright orange flowers. The plant can get up to 4' tall with flower stalks extending out and down-facing flowers looking like falling stars.

Habitat:

Open grass lands, moist open forests, gardens

Notes:

This plant is an african native but can be found in gardens in many countries. Here in Victoria, we see it growing wild on low ranges and in state forests - obviously invasive. It adds a bright touch to very dark damp spots in the forest.

Yes martinl, unfortunately this place beside the Belgrave lake is overrun by invasive species - like ranunculus (buttercups), hypericum, crocosmia and Tradescantia among others. They seem to be smothering natives ! Most of my postings of flowers are non-natives - maybe I should start-up a mission on invasive/foreign species (plants only).
Yes it sounds like a weed to me. Pic 2 has leaves of another weed Ranunculus.
they soon will be I think - they take over but, I don't think they're difficult to get rid of if you start early. Having said that, you might leave behind a bulb or two and then it starts all over again !!
Very attractive flowers when they grow wild all over. Are they a 'weed' there yet?
