Good guess Liam! You are maybe half right. Vanessa cardui is not in South America. There is Vanessa carye which is the Southern type of Cardui. There are Terpsichore and Braziliensis in Chile as well. But I am not very happy with the markings in these ones. I would say it is Vanessa carye.
It is not possible that this one is a Monarch. Do you have another shot?
