An update Martin - I appologise but wish to withdraw my suggestion having read more about these. Your comment re the electron microscope is most applicable. I have found out that the 'grey and furry' look is not indicative of species and variation for many covers from this to the green ones we also see. :-( Stay with it if you want.

I haven't seen others here yet but I can check the wing venation next time with my toy micro for the double terminal wing cells test. "In eastern North America, only Anormenis chloris has the double row of apical wing cells, visible in the field as the insect is at rest. No, I think yours are better martin but if they are of interest I'm sure we can get some better shots and maybe even borrow some live ones for a really close look

Leuba and argybee, Thanks for your reply. I think my photo is not quite clear enough to be certain but I see no other options. This is clearly common and could feasibly migrate worldwide, as the green one has. My cautions are its yellowish eye and chalky surface but the profile is too similar and I do think it is a match. Are your photos clearer?

Hi martinl, It could be Anormenis chloris - blue/grey flatid http://www.americaninsects.net/h/anormenis-chloris.html wonder if this restricted to the US but looked similar to the ones I spotted this morning on gum trees and plants- suddenly they are everywhere- I will put mine up later. I wonder if this is it ! - your looks very fluffy.
