Field Notes

Notes:

Found this little guy in my back yard, picked him up to take a picture and show his size, then gently placed him back on the ground....I've been seeing box turtles in my yard for 30 years....this was the smallest one ever.

That is a yearling, and is a wonderful sighting. Box turtles are very long lived and some populations suffer from lack of recruitment. Since you have a thriving population, you can further support it by watching for nesting activity in late May, early June and protecting the nests. Although turtles seem very passive and friendly, they are nonetheless wild animals. I am so glad you placed him right back where you found him. Thanks for sharing!
