Description:

Enormous water bug, about the size of my palm. While very elegant on water, it's running on land was rather bizarre!

Ohh god! I don't even want to imagine one of them sneaking under the table and biting my toes! thanks for the ID!
This bug is a toe biter bug, and yes, they can bite, actually jab with their proboscis.
haven't seen one of these since I was a kid...good photo !
