Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized duck with dark upper body that has a white ring around the neck. Bill has a a black tip, gray for the most part but also has white markings at both the base of the bill and toward the balck tip.

Habitat:

In this area this is a migratory bird that does not stay here very long, but does pass through every year on it's annual migration. According to a state bird reference these birds are uncommon migrants which usually don't move through here until mid - march.

Notes:

It is very unusual to see these birds in central Illinois this time of the year. I suspect these birds are already starting back north for this year. There were several of these birds that were present, but were beyond the range of the camera for any meaningful picture. i returned to the location of these birds and added pictures taken today, Sunday January 29, 2012.
