That's cool Vee, just make sure if you put any in your garden that you buy them from a reputable nursery as it's illegal to dig them up unless they are on private land and you have the owners permission. At least that's the situation in the UK & I think it's the same in Canada. Wild orchids that are transplanted often die too & some are so dependent on certain funghi, that they are next to impossible to cultivate for any length of time. That said, there are some that will grow very well in your garden given the similar conditions that they would have in the wild. Nothing beats seeing them growing in their natural habitat, that's for certain :D
Sure! Canadian orchids are as cold hardy as any Canadian ;0) There's a list here with links to photos. Most are smaller flowered than some more obvious warm growing sisters but look closely and they're just gorgeous!
Craig.. probably not. I've only seen the ones you get from garden stores and keep indoors :( Do any actually grow outside and can withstand the winter??
Hello Nuwan. Is this in the wild or a garden. It looks like a form or cultivated variety of Spathoglottis plicata, which is most commonly pink: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spathoglottis_plicata
It's quite a weedy orchid, favouring the kind of disturbed ground man is good at providing. In Malaysia I even saw it growing in about 2cm of sludge over concrete on a building site!
