I had no idea that Coyotes are such a polarizing species, but from the comments, I see why. The fact is that we all form our opinions based on our own experiences and our own education. Great character in a person is revealed not only in being unafraid to voice those opinions, but to be respectful and courteous as well; acknowledging that we can all learn from each other.
Thank you all for enlightening me. I'm so hurt to hear that my opinions do not concur with those of everyone on this site. I'll try to be more conscientious in the future, I promise.
This is a good link about avoiding coyote conflicts: http://jeffco.us/sheriff/sheriff_T62_R260.htm
...and remember that they are just doing their best to live and survive. They don't mean any malice on our pets or people. Here is a link of some photos I took of some coyote cubs and their mother: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/11456434
Humans tend to hate what they fear and hate what they don't understand. Coyotes always get the "you know what" end of the stick! They are natural American predators! They were here long before us! They are smart as hell and are adapt to living in the city, the suburbs as well as many wild ecosystems. That is why they are so prevalent, because they are so cunning. Without them we would be overrun with rabbits, prairie dogs and other such critters that carry many diseases that we and our pets can contract - like the bubonic plague! I adore Coyotes, so I am biased! I have a wild pack that lives near my house. In fact, they killed to wild rabbits last night and were singing and howling to one another right out in front of my window. It would be a terribly sad day to not hear that song at night. Gina, I would take this as an opportunity to educate yourself and talk to the city and county you live in about interacting safely with your wild neighbors! I also own cats, dogs and a lovebird!
I was a vet tech for 8 years and I'm sorry, but I feel it is irresponsible to let your cat outdoors unattended at any time. Domestic cats, let outdoors kill native birds, wildlife and are more likely to die early due to run ins with vehicles and wild predators. I am pro hunting and pro population control, don't get me wrong but I can't stand it when I hear someone spreading hate on a creature they don't understand.
Gina M. This is website a place of life and fun. stop hatin' and get of your high horse. They are not demon creatures. They're animals and all have a right to life. If you let your pets out at any time and YOU know coyotes out there, hate to tell ya, but thats your fault sister. I feel your pain tho. I have them at my place and I chase them off like a beast and have other humane ways of dealing with them. did u ever think thats how wildlife is supposed to live? Naturally. uncheked by humans. its just trying to justify death by saying we "need" to "check" them. these are beautiful creatures and dont you forget it. i mean look at that thing! its awesome! anyway, if you want to keep on hatin', take it somewhere else, please and thank you.
@Gina M: Sorry about your pets, but it is obviously not the coyote's fault. It has as well with all other creatures the right to live. Your comment on this one does in my eyes not fit the thinking of most of the people on Project Noah.
This is the only way I want to see one of these animals. DEAD. I live in Western NC too and have lost several cats and one of our pet hens to these horrible demon creatures. They were brought here by unethical hunters for sport as I understand, and have now over run the place. There is no "season" on them because of their over population.
This coyote is not alive. Several years ago, coyotes were released into this area to keep the deer population in check. This action was influenced by the insurance industry to reduce deer related collisions. Consequently, we are overrun by coyotes that have little fear of humans and predate on domesticated animals and small wildlife far more than deer. Since Coyotes are at the top of the food chain in this region, it is up to the farmers and landowners to keep the coyote population under control. They are beautiful animals, as are the deer, calves, chickens, dogs, cats and other critters that share the countryside!
Hope this one is a live!! Here in Norway we have a group about not to buy Canada Goose and Parajumpers jackets. They use Coyote pelt on the hood, so I don't buy jackets from them!
