Field Notes

Description:

I think it's a fungi; the top looks like a mushroom before it splits open to reveal its spongy, slimy, foul smelling insides. It literally smells like rotten garbage.

Habitat:

Northwest Florida, temperatures in the 60-70 F range. 2-3 in. in sandy soil with tops exposed. Scattered throughout yard, between 10-30 ft from the brackish bayou.

Notes:

A reddish coral color, reminds me of the legs of a starfish only porous & spongy. Upon opening it is similar to an egg, with a clear slime surrounding the "spongy starfish".

Thanks for responding! Yes, it smells quite unpleasant... I will post a couple more pictures of its growth, it does have a basket shape. Thanks again;)
