Field Notes

Description:

This Mantid Lacewing has the pinkish wings each with a pink pterostigma. Their raptorial forelegs are powerful for predating. The coax is extremely elongated. The femur bears spines long and short along ventral margin. Their last two pairs of legs are long for fast prey attack action. Body length 30mm

Habitat:

Spotted in backyard in rainforest area at night

Notes:

I spotted this at night time as i was walking down to the chook pen. A pair of tiny but very bright eyes caught my eye as i shone the torch over the ground and on closer inspection discovered that it had just molted.

Great spotting alice, congrats on the well deserved SOTW and thanks for sharing
Thanks ingrid, James and Ashley! I did Ashley and I think you recommended the canon f2.8100mm? That's what I used with a set of kenko extension tubes :)
Congrats Alice! What lens did you use for this one? I remember you asking about recommendations for a macro lens not long ago?
Congrats Alice, incredible images, well deserved

Wow thanks very much for the nomination fyn and the other rangers! Such an honour to be nominated! :D
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
Sorry forestdragon i completely forgot to change that when i got the ID! Thankyou
Alice, this is a wonderful spotting! However, Mantid Lacewings are not Mantids and so this spotting can't remain in the Marvelous Mantids of the World mission.
Thank you very much Mark, Pam, Martin and Daniele!! I was pretty lucky to spot it! Any ideas on ID?
Well done Alice. This is a gem.
Super spotting and shots Alice. Really weird creatures. The eyes are always quite hypnotic.
Thanks James! I haven't done much macro before so I was pretty lucky to come across this one!
