Field Notes

Description:

This newly emerged Monarch is very small, about two-thirds the size of an average Monarch, with an estimated wingspan of about 2 inches. Most likely cause is lack of availability of food during the dryer, cooler winter months. Chrysalis is visible in bottom right corner of first picture.

Beautiful! Would make a lovely addition to the Monarch Migration Mission!
Great spot! It is very reminiscent of a spotting I had last summer! http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7766475
