Field Notes

Description:

Two of its most distinctive features are its extremely dexterous front paws and its facial mask, along with a fuzzy striped tail.

Habitat:

The original habitats of the raccoon are deciduous and mixed forests of North America, but due to their adaptability they have extended their range to mountainous areas, coastal marshes, and urban areas, where many homeowners consider them to be pests. As a result of escapes and deliberate introductions in the mid-20th century, raccoons are now also distributed across the European mainland, the Caucasus region and Japan.

Notes:

A lot of people think of the raccoon as a nuisance, as they tend to get into everything including trash cans. They have even been photographed coming in through doggy doors and swiping things from homes. I personally love their strong personalities and love watching the 6 that visit my property and pond almost nightly. This little one just awoke from a nap in my oak tree, and appears to be sticking his tongue out at me for disturbing it.

LOL @bayucca Have a wonderful weekend - going to be working on my Bird Counts for Audubon this weekend.
That's something for Emma! I hope she can enjoy her tooth cleaning by her DH like this ..., relaxed... http://www.flickr.com/photos/maryevans/5139720525/
Thanks! I probably have to open up a second raccy gallery ;-)...
@bayucca - wonderful collection - I do have a Flickr account that contains this photo and others of raccoons. Feel free to browse (and include any you wish) http://www.flickr.com/photos/maryevans
Oh, I love these little bandits with their paws... http://www.flickr.com/photos/dominikhofer/galleries/72157623018570406/ I would have loved to include Mary's in my gallery...!
Getting back to Raccoons ,they really have dextrous paws. I usually hide food in the crevices of the deck just to see them use their paws. .
No, it is depending how carefully you brush.
Actually the way they advertise for mouth washes is that brushing removes only 25 percent of the plaque. Do you believe that?
Yes, we have all of them...
So you have these same brands in Switzerland ?
For how many seconds you can leave Listerine in your mouth? My record is 24.7 s. Yes, ACT is better...
ofcourse!gave me a priceless tip that ACT is better than Listerine for mouthwash.
Did it also teach HOW to clean your teeth? ;-)...
Yup Bayucca, that is all it takes,to have your teeth cleaned by a Raccoon!
So Emma, you would like your DH wears next time a black mask? ;-)...
Would make a great dental hygienist, considering how dextrous its paws are!
these are very cute! Claws are vicious!
Great spotting and information, Mary! Thanks for posting to Florida's Flora & Fauna Mission.
