Field Notes

Description:

A group of over 19 king parrots feeding at my backyard bird feeder after the rain. They were joined by some Rosellas and crested pigeons. Male king parrot have red heads and females green. Juvenile males can be distinguished from females as they have yellow/light brown beaks and evidence of the light green wing stripe. One juvenile king parrot displayed unusual yellow feathers on its back instead of green. Unfortunately i couldn't get them all in one shot!

Habitat:

Australian King Parrots range from North and Central Queensland to Southern Victoria. They are frequently seen in small groups with various species of rosella. Further from their normal eastern upland habitat, they are also found in Canberra during winter, the outer western suburbs and north shore of Sydney, and the Carnarvon Gorge in Central Queensland.

That's very unfortunate to hear these beautiful birds are in pet stores but it is obvious to see why people would want them. I am visited by them and all the rest every single day so i'd be more than happy to share more :)

Yes, they are very pretty, and in the mountains here we also have the stellar's Jay, also beautiful. Unfortunately all of the birds that you get to see every day, we only get to see in the pet stores.....please keep sharing!!

It really is amazing. But what's even more amazing is that there were over 19 and they were joined by galahs and rosellas equally beautiful birds. We're also lucky enough to get rainbow lorikeets if you see my other spottings. So many pretty birds in one place! Blue jays are very beautiful too!

I can only imagine having such amazing birds at my feeders. Unfortunately all we get are blue Jays and finches....maybe a woodpecker....still pretty but no comparison.
