Field Notes

Description:

Australia's large flightless bird standing up to almost 2 metres tall. Brown-grey shaggy plumage parted down the back. member of the ratites, they have very basic wings of no use for flying. their legs are long and powerful allowing emus to reach ground speeds of nearly 50km per hour. Large short but wide beak, large orange eyes in adults, blue skin from base of head down neck sparsley covered with black, hair-like feathers. Emus are nomadic, eating fruits, leaves, flowers and shoots of native plants and supplement with insects. Females lay the eggs and males incubate them. Chicks are dark after hatching, feathers quickly replaced by tan, cream and black striped plumage, replaced again in about six months by adult coloured plumage.

Habitat:

Found throughout Australia, once to a greater extent. Emus were considered pests and almost exterminated in many regions.
