Field Notes

Description:

A small "triangular" plant hopper about 6mm long with blue-grey wings and head. It looks very much like the Flatid plant hopper "Anormenis chloris" found in the US except for it's eyes which appear yellowish compared to the white eyes of A.chloris. The latter also appears to have clearer venation on the front wings.

Habitat:

Eucalyptus trees and plants in open grasslands near waterways

Notes:

Have an ID at last - Thanks to Argybee.

Species ID Suggestions

The Grey Planthopper

Anzora unicolor (Walker) [syn. Sephena cinerea Kirkaldy]

I appologise but wish to withdraw my suggestion having read more about these. I have found out that the 'grey and furry' look is not really indicative of species and variation may range from this to the green ones we also see. :-( Stay with it if you want.
Argybee, people who study these things use dissected body parts under electron microscopes and wing patterns to decide with certainty their species. I'd roll mine out if I had three phase power, but alas! :) I think we can make a cautious guess one. Thanks for your good research.
