Field Notes
Description:
Seriema, or Crested Screamer Siriema is the common name given to the birds belonging to the family Cariamidae, Cariamiformes order. They are medium sized birds, terrestrial, who prefer running to flying. The group is native to South America and inhabits areas of open grassland or forests. The seriemas feed on insects, small lizards and snakes, as well as cashew cashews and savanna. In contact with humans, the seriemas are always suspicious and when they feel threatened by them, usually open their wings and face them. Legend has it that the song of this bird indicates the end of the rainy season.
Accept different types of foods given to man, as corn and pieces of bread. Walk in pairs or small groups. Only fly when they feel forced. At night shelter in the treetops, where they also build their nests. From the Tupi, Siriema Nhandu = small or seriema Nhandu = crested.
Habitat:
Present in open areas from the south of Maranhão and Pará to western Mato Grosso states present in the southeastern and southern Brazil, largely absent in forested areas of the Amazon. Also found in Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.
