Field Notes

Description:

This is a medium-sized toad about 5–9 cm (2.0–3.5 in) in length. Color is variable on its rough skin, but the coloring in the photo is representative. They can change color somewhat depending upon temperature and humidity. Their call is a high trill lasting for several seconds.

Habitat:

I find these toads in my yard and in the woods behind the house. They breed in ponds, but are largely terrestrial the rest of the summer and fall. They hibernate at the bottoms of ponds.

Notes:

I often find the young toads while mowing the grass, so during the season when the young are plentiful I spend a lot of time catching these little guys and moving them back into the forest.
