Field Notes

Description:

Very common in treed areas along the east coast of Australia. A small (300mm) parrot with rich red head and body; etched black, blue, red back feathers; deep tones of blues to turquoise in straight, long, fine tail; beak small, light grey. A very quiet and cautious bird but adaptable and quick learning. It call regularly with a variety of melodic, short tunes or rapid response flurries between each other.

Habitat:

Forest to open woodlands, tropical to cool temperate.

Notes:

Judging from the wear marks this is probably at its nest. It was a very large Victorian mountain ash (maybe E. regnans). The opening was approximately 15 metres above ground. The tree was about 50 metres tall and has a girth of about 6 metres.

Thank you. One of my favourite local birds. This is my first spotting of their natural nest.
