True, Pine Siskin fits better, should have known we get huge flocks of them every year. Good Call!
Goldfinches still retain some yellowish color in winter plumage, though they are mostly olive. They never show the conspicuous streaking of this bird. Pine Siskins look a lot like other finches (House, Purple), but can be easily distinguished by their sharp bill and yellow-edged primaries and coverts. Looks like this bird has a slightly deformed bill.
That may be right, but if you look at the pictures, none of the goldfinches in winter plumage have a bright yellow spot in the middle. Nice photo!
I agree Goldfinch, they can also consume a remarkable amount of Niger Seed in a day!
I'd have to agree with jgorneau.... Goldfinches never change colors from summer to winter
