Field Notes

Description:

This rather attractive caterpillar has an orange head and typically an orange hump towards the tail. (Can't be seen on this shot.) It's sides are lined with yellow, orange and black stripes and is about 1 cm (.5 in) in length.

Habitat:

These caterpillars tend to feed on maples in deciduous forests and suburban settings.

Notes:

This caterpillar fell out of the overhead maple tree while I was photographing a colony of carpenter ants.
