Some kind of brownish water snake hiding in the marsh

Habitat:

Spotted in a marsh on the edge of Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana.

hope you find out what it is. Pity you didn't see get to the whole creature - good spotting, though !
Most likely a Nerodia sp. Which one is hard to tell from this.
