Field Notes

Description:

Brown and slender. Females have reduced wings, as compared to males. Hind portion of pronotum not much longer than front portion.

Habitat:

Range: Eastern U.S. east of Great Plains, south from about Nebraska, Ohio River, and Maryland, and through Texas south into Mexico.

Notes:

This male was attracted to my backyard blacklight.

I had never seen one before in my life and had to do a bit of research to get it identified. Yes, it was incredibly small as compared to other mantids I'm used to seeing.

I didn't realize how small this species was until the second picture, wow. And that's fully grown! I image the females are bigger, but not by too much.
