Village weaver
Ploceus cucullatus
-28.2634, 31.94
Field Notes
Description:
Male builds kidney shaped nest to attract the females (pic #2). The 3rd pic is blurry but shows a weaver with his very first bit of grass to start a nest. He struggled in this spot so soon flew off to a better spot! #4/5/6 show some progression in the nest building and the amazing knot tying they use. They nest in large colonies of dozens of individuals. When a female comes along they test the nest by trying to pull it apart. If it falls apart the male looses the female and has to rebuild his nest from scratch.
Habitat:
Variety of wooded habitats.
Notes:
I have a video of them building a nest that I will try and add later.
