Rachael, I really don't think this belongs to the Cotton stainers or fire bug fam. I think your first instinct was correct. This most definitively looks to me like a Pentatomidae. The body structure looks to me most like that of a Cydnidae (Burrowing Bug). But the net is turning up nothing with that color pattern.

Well after a lot of searching on the web I've found a bug that has the same markings and colouring as this one. The only difference is that this beetle is rounder and the head seems slightly different. I'm narrowing it down to Pyrrhocoridae family. Cotton stainers or fire bugs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrrhocoridae If anyone has any expertise on these bugs I'd love to know what species this one is exactly.

amazing! It's interesting that this bug has a similar "hour glass" pattern to the North American Black Widow Spider.
