Field Notes

Description:

Armadillos are New World placental mammals with a leathery armor shell. The word armadillo in Spanish means "little armored one". The Aztec called them azotochtli, Nahuatl for “turtle-rabbit.”

Habitat:

Roadside ditch, near a state park

Notes:

Sadly, I've seen way more run over armadillos than live ones, but I think that's probably the case with most people. The live ones I've gotten to observe have all allowed me to get fairly close for photos.
