Field Notes

Description:

Green grasshopper covered with a brown dust which I think is fungal spore. I have cropped the photos so that the brown marks can be better seen.

Habitat:

Botanical Garden.

Notes:

The grasshopper seemed listless; almost dead. Usually I see (in photos) white fungal filaments cover the hapless insect; even emerge from inside...this one was dusted with spores...early infection, maybe?

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (4)

Pyrgomorphidae - maybe 'Red Base-winged Vegetable Grasshopper' (Atractomorpha crenulata) ?
Thanks Machi....to my eyes it looked like powdery stuff but yes, an ID will help resolve it...hope it is not fungus...an awful way to die.
I don't know if those are spores.. Some grasshoppers have little bumps and spikes on them and can be healthy. If you get a species ID you can probably confirm whether or not it is healthy
