Field Notes

Description:

The elk or wapiti is one of the largest species of the Cervidae or deer family in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America. This was my first sighting as I was entering Yellowstone National Park just before dusk, what a wonderful welcome! I also have a short video.

Habitat:

Forest and forest-edge habitat, feeding on grasses, plants, leaves, and bark.

Notes:

This is my spotting No. 4,200

He's a bit chubby, but what a majestic animal! Beautiful!
Congratulations on getting a majestic animal for your 4200th spotting!
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!

Great photo and video, Luis! I just saw my first elk last weekend, it ran by me in the trees and I wasn't able to get photos :/ Was exciting though!
