Field Notes

Description:

An elongated fish with a compact body and very long snout. Also known as Pacific Trumpetfish, Painted Flutemouth and Tahiti Cornet Fish.

Quite often they can be found mimicking a fish, changing color to match the fish, resting alongside ready to pounce. They feed almost exclusively on small, schooling reef fish, but also on small crustaceans. They grow to about 60-90cm in length. Colors vary to match their surroundings or the fish they are stalking!

Habitat:

Found singly on the bottom of reefs sometimes in rocky areas, at depths of 0 to 15m. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

Spotted this trumpet at a depth of about 50 feet or so, during a day dive at the "Bing's Corner" dive site, off the western coast of Malipano Island, Samal.
