Field Notes

Description:

These birds are about 12–14 cm (5-5.5 in) in length. They are gray above and grayish white below. A black throat bordered with white cheek patches, rusty brown sides and cap complete the plumage.

Habitat:

Boreal forest.

Notes:

I photographed this pert little bird in northern Minnesota at a feeder, which can be seen in the background. These birds remain in their breeding habitat year round, but sometimes make a southerly move in some years.
