Field Notes

Description:

Female Photuris (P. pennsylvanica-versicolor) are known to lure Photinus males using the same flash pattern of female Photinus, and eat them to obtain defensive chemicals. These chemicals make them distasteful to predators such as spiders & birds. This type of predation is referred to as aggressive mimicry.

Habitat:

Eastern North America. Meadows, woods, forests. They mostly live under bark & decaying vegetation on the ground.
