Looks like it has been ID'd by NuwanChaturanga. Check out the movie I posted above. Seems like it was the caterpillar I thought it was that made the cocoon. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8511554
this is a cocoon of lappet moth but i couldn't find any links to prove it
Argybee, it's soft and flexible, sort of like felt. Several of them are now empty, the 'bird' having flown. They leave by splitting it open on one end. Inside is a hard sort of chrysalis shell. I'll dissect one, take a photo, and post it. This one I posted seems to still be in tact.
It looks like it may have been formed by water. Any changes pamsai?
Seems like you'll need to watch it and let us know if possible. I'd like to know if anything is going on above it.
Anyone have any idea what creature might inhabit this?
