Field Notes

Description:

A "giant shield bug" (Family Tessaratomidae) measuring approximately 40mm tip of head to end of abdomen. Identified to genus level visually. In Papua there are just two possible species http://www.papua-insects.nl/insect%20orders/Hemiptera/Heteroptera/Heter… Oncomeris chrysoptera http://www.heteroptera.fr/tessite/Oncomeris/O.chrysoptera.html and O. flavicornis http://www.heteroptera.fr/tessite/Oncomeris/O.flavicornis.html . The specimen spotted here has a broken scutellum http://www.wildguideuk.com/glossary/glossary_hemiptera_1.html and the color of the pronotum differs from the aboved linked images of these two species.

Habitat:

Spotted on a banana tree in a large semi-urban yard & garden in close proximity to a disturbed patch of remnant forest.
