Description:

I have just returned from the dramatic Simiens Mountains National Park in northern Ethiopia where I enjoyed the most incredible experiences with Geladas. These fierce looking primates actually only feed on grass and roots but posses the largest canines in proportion to body size of any mammal! These are used in rather fearsome displays especially when the males flip their gums back in a lip flare. However Geladas have never harmed humans and I was privileged to spent hours sitting right in amongst troops of over 500 Geladas, watching their incredibly entertaining and amusing behaviour. A truly amazing experience that cannot be more highly recommended.

Habitat:

Montane grasslands and cliffs

Great series. Great shots of these beautiful animals. It must hev been an amazing experience.
Wow!!! That's amazing... I'm quite jealous. Really great series :)
These are crazy great shots !!!
Terrific spotting and narrative! Congrats on such a terrific experience.
Congrats on being highlighted on Animal Planet, Adam. Awesome detail on your series.
I highly recommend a book about baboons called, A Primate's Memoir, by Robert Sapolsky. He's a physiologist who spent 20 summers researching baboons, and he's an excellent writer.
Congratulations Adam, this amazing photo has been featured by Animal Planet! http://blogs.discovery.com/animal-planet-big-pic/2012/06/gelada-baboon-of-ethiopia.html
Wow, I didn't even know these existed. Beautiful and regal. Nice spotting!
Thanks for another spotting of the day, I am very honoured! Am heading home now from Ethiopia and will post more spottings from my trip soon. PS as recommended by Ava, A Primate's Memoir is a superb book
great pics Adam and what a wonderful experience ! All that silken hair - wonder if it is as soft as it looks...
wow! congratulations! :)
There's a lovely book about baboons called A Primate's Memoir by Robert Sapolsky. It's a good read, and very interesting about baboon culture and life.
Wow Adam, great series you've captured! Congrats on Spotting of the Day! "Don't be fooled be the menacing canines of the Gelada. They feed primarily on grass in the highlands of Ethiopia, and live in large social groups called harems." This is amazing. A few days ago I saw them on television. They said they have learned to avoid fights and that the red mark on the chest signifies which male is better. The deeper the color, the better it is.
Wonder work my dear friend. It poses like a jubilant Hollywood actress posing in an inexpensive designer dress on a red carpet.
What a wonderful series. And how privileged to have been able to experience being with those animals!
Superb Pics Adam!!!
Fantastic pictures Adam.... That's some huge teeth..
Wonderful series Adam! I love the first photo!
