Field Notes

Description:

A deciduous tree whose most impressive features, especially in winter, are the large and numerous spines emanating from the trunk and branches.

Habitat:

Here in Iowa, mainly found in wetter areas, like along creeks or river-courses.

Notes:

A quick search reveals that these spines were hard and sharp enough to use as nails in softer woods. They certainly looked dangerous.
