Field Notes

Description:

Pieridae; Coliadinae; Eurema hecabe tamiathis Fruhstorfer, 1910. When I took this single photo this morning, in a rice field, my attention was focused on a spider in the rice crop. This little butterfly was just a distraction, but I couldn't resist just one photo. It was not until this evening when I started preparing some pictures for P. N. that I noticed something rather interesting in my one butterfly photo. Yes, you've probably noticed it. The Common Grass Yellow was ovipositing. If I had paid more attention, I might have been able to take a picture of one of its eggs.

Habitat:

Spotted visiting a variety of unidentified plants growing on the turf dyke (partition) running through a rice field.

Notes:

In the Wikipedia article on the species Eurema hecabe, there is a list of 16 subspecies, but Eurema hecabe tamiathis is not included. However, since E. h. tamiathis is included in Philippine Lepidoptera's website, I have no doubts about distribution in Philippines. To be fair to Wiki, there is an "edit" feature at the top of their list of ssp. So, I am sure they realize that the list is incomplete.
