Field Notes

Description:

Elk are one of the largest species of the Cervidae or deer family in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America.

Habitat:

High Mountain meadow

Notes:

While the high energy of the rut continues all around them, I captured this tender embrace between a mother elk and her 5 month old calf. This mother was still so bonded and attentive to this calf. While other calves roamed a distance from their mothers, this one stayed close. She regularly groomed the calf and nuzzled her. It was very heartwarming to watch.

What a sweet moment, Emily! Awesome you get to see elk, I've only seen one as it ran by me in the woods. Would love to be able to photograph them! That can also be on the list to do when I come visit you! ;)
