Erebus Macrops
14.2004, 75.0208
Field Notes
Description:
Looks like common evening brown butterfly of the family Nymphalidae.
Seen in corner of a rooftop. But it is actually Owl moth of the family Noctuidae and sub family Satiranae(thanks to the tag of Nuwan) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erebus_macrops
difference with evening brown: Evening brown is seen only during evening or early morning. But this is seen during all times.
It can be easily confused with below butterflies
1)Bush brown Mycalesis perseus(Genus Mycalesis of the same family) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycalesis_perseus
2)Dark brander bush brown http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycalesis_mineus
3)Common Tree brown http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethe_rohria
Notes:
Difference between moths and butterflies:
===============
One of the easiest ways to tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth is to look at the antennae. A butterfly’s antennae are club-shaped with a long shaft and a bulb at the end. A moth’s antennae are feathery or saw-edged.
