Field Notes

Description:

'Possibly the rarest large mammal on earth, with a population of as few as 40 in Ujung Kulon National Park at the western tip of Java in Indonesia.'

Habitat:

tropical rainforest

Notes:

Ujung Kulon is the last stronghold for these critically endangered species. I spent about a week in the park, hoping for a glimpse. While I wasn't lucky enough to spot one in the flesh, I spotted these fresh tracks near the beach and many other older tracks in the forest. It was so cool to think a Javan Rhino had just walked where I was standing, no less than 12 hours before. I think with more time and patience, it's possible to see them in the wild in the park.
