Field Notes

Description:

I always want to call this bird an American Goldfinch. It's not. It's a Pine Warbler. I apparently have some plump ones and some skinnier ones that visit my yard.

Oh thanks, Donna. They are frequent visitors in my yard lately. (Month of January). They like the finch sock. I'm also very new to birding, so I have a lot to learn.
This is a Pine Warbler. The bill is dark and slender. A goldfinch has a conical bill. The yellowish coloring on the breast and belly are also that of a Pine Warbler. American Goldfinches lose most of their yellow in winter, except for a little on the face. You can also see hints of streaking along the sides on this warbler. The wingbars on a goldfinch are much more prominent. These are very nice pictures of a difficult group of birds to photograph.
